Summer weather driving tips

Staying safe on the roads when the heat is on

Summer road trips are very common in New Zealand, whether it’s a family holiday or a group of friends hitting the beach. It’s a great time to be on the road exploring all that New Zealand has to offer.

Driving in the heat, especially long distance can be hard both on the driver and passengers.  There are also some risk factors that are more prominent for the vehicle in hot weather.

To ensure you get safely from A to B when you are driving in hot weather you need to take a few precautions. Preparing your vehicle for hot conditions is vital, so is making sure as a driver you know what to expect and you’re taking care of your passengers too.

Before you hit the roads give your vehicle a check up, keeping in mind the risk factors for cars in hot weather:

  • Make sure your radiator is in good condition, check the fluids frequently
  • Make sure your car has enough water; check this along with the oil more frequently in summer. Always check this before embarking on a long trip
  • Make sure your sun visors are doing the job; glare from the sun either directly or from other vehicles can blind you temporarily
  • Make sure your air conditioning system is working well
  • Check your tyres regularly during summer and before long trips

As a driver take special care when driving in the heat:

  • Plan to drive when the sun is not at its most intense, for long trips start early in the morning or late in the afternoon
  • If you stop for a break, park your car in the shade
  • Get some fresh air when you are driving, it helps keep you alert
  • Make sure your passengers are comfortable and have enough air
  • Wear suitable clothing that is breathable and light
  • Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated
  • Stop for a swim along the way if you’re driving near the ocean, rivers or lakes
  • Never leave children or pets in the car unattended
  • Use sun shades in the back seat to protect passengers from the sun, especially children

Just like at any other time of the year and in all weather conditions, the basics of driving safely such as sticking to the speed limit, wearing your seatbelt and avoiding distractions are all essential to keeping safe on the roads.
