Using your GPS safely

Find your way with a Global Positioning System (GPS)

GPS devices can be very useful especially when you are in an unfamiliar area or don’t know where you are going. A GPS can help you navigate your way out of traffic jams or road blocks.

Global positioning systems offer you the best route based on their settings. They will not always give you the quickest route and therefore are better used in areas that you are not familiar with.

Using any electronic device while driving is distracting and a GPS, although made for drivers, is no exception.

Here are some tips for using your GPS safely:

  • Don’t play with your GPS while driving. Read the instructions well and set the system up properly before you use it
  • Position your GPS in an easy to see position so you don’t have to strain to see it. The best place for a GPS is on the front windshield, below eye level
  • Adjust your settings to see what works best for you. For example, some voices may be more appealing than others. If you use your GPS a lot, you want to choose a voice that you don’t mind listening to
  • Make sure the audio volume is not too loud or too soft. Set this up before you hit the road
  • Other settings you will need to choose include how your screen displays the road. You might have options for road view, map view or sky view. Choose the one you find easiest to read and set this before you head off
  • If at any time during your trip you need to adjust the settings of your GPS pull over to a safe spot. Any time you try to adjust the settings your focus is taken away from the road and that is dangerous
  • It always helps to have a mental picture of the route before you go if possible. Know the general direction and distance as well as street names and landmarks
  • Try to get used to only using the voice to guide you while you are driving. This means trusting that the GPS will guide you in the right direction. This is far safer than trying to look at the screen

Driving with a GPS is a good idea if you are prone to getting lost or are unsure of how to find your way around a new destination. The technology can be a huge help to you but it should be used with caution, and basic safe driving practice should always be a priority.
