A survey of New Zealand general insurers undertaken by the insurance council in 1998 found that insurance fraud is costing New Zealanders' a conservative $62 million annually or $62 per household.
The most common form of insurance fraud is non disclosure at the time a policy is taken out. This may be an innocent oversight or a case of fraud, however it is usually detected when a claim is made and may result in the claim being rejected.
