Simpler process for settling Kaikoura Earthquake claims

We’re making it easier for our customers to lodge and manage their home and contents claims as a result of the Kaikoura earthquakes.

We have signed an agreement with the EQC to receive, assess and settle home and contents claims for earthquake damage from Tower customers, and customers we underwrite. This includes claims that are under the EQC cap. EQC will continue to assess land damage as land is not covered by private insurance policies.

The agreement is between the EQC and the Insurance Council of New Zealand’s members who offer home and contents insurance and will not change your entitlements under your insurance policy or the EQC Act.

As per the Earthquake Commission Act 1993, earthquake claims are required to be lodged within three months of the earthquake, which was 14th February 2017. If you have already lodged a claim with us and would like to discuss it further please call us on 0800 379 372.

If you have already lodged a claim with the EQC, you will not need to do anything as the EQC will pass your claim on to us.

  • Following the earthquake and aftershocks in late 2016, we reviewed our criteria for accepting new business in the affected areas. Restrictions were applied to certain areas due to increased chance of damage. We regularly review these restrictions.
  • As of 14 February 2016, we are pleased to offer policies and sum insured increases in most areas, subject to standard underwriting criteria.
  • Restrictions remain in place for Christchurch, Wellington and Wairarapa, and the North Canterbury Region. If you want to insure a property in one of these areas, please call us to discuss your insurance needs.
