Smart ideas for a safe and happy Easter

Heading away? Doing some DIY? Or spending time with family? Whatever you're up to this Easter, have a safe and happy break.

Family, fun, and a whole lot of choc —there's no holiday quite like Easter. Whether you're hopping away or chilling at home, here are some easy ways to think ahead for a safe and relaxing Easter break.

Heading away?

Easter is a busy time for travel. In fact, Thursday is the busiest day of the year. So, make sure you're set before you hit the road. Here are a few tips to help make sure your journey is a safe and enjoyable one.

Tower's roadside assistance, RoadWise®, can provide support to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's an optional benefit when you buy car insurance with us, providing assistance with breakdowns, flat tyres, and more.

If you already have a car insurance policy with us, you can add RoadWise to your policy* by logging into My Tower or calling us on 0800 379 372.

Love your car before you go

Give your car a once-over, check oil and wipers, and make sure your tyres are properly pumped up to save on fuel. If you have time, pop your car in with a mechanic for a service for added peace of mind.

How often should your car be serviced?

Choose the best time to travel

Use the NZTA journey planner or look at Google Maps to find the best time and route. Leave early if you can to avoid those gnarly traffic jams.

Get smart with security

If you're away overnight, consider using timers or a smart lighting system to create the illusion of someone home, or consider buying outdoor security lights with motion sensors.

Tower's guide to keeping your home safe while you're away.

Staying home?

Staying home? With the long weekend, it's a great time to catch up on DIY. But don't let a small job turn into a big job by rushing in too fast.

Take a look at our six do's and don'ts of DIY!

If you're planning on doing a small remodel or major renovation, it pays to safeguard your property against the unexpected. If you're a Tower customer, consider our Contract works - renovation cover to help give you peace of mind on the journey.

Give your tools some TLC

Check your tools are in good shape before you start. Sharp blades, tight screws, and charged batteries mean less hassle and few oopsies.

Watch for sneaky pipes

Check before you dig to make sure you don't hit pipes. Your local council has GIS maps to make it easy. It's not fun finding water where you don't want it.

Measure twice, hammer once

It's harder than it looks to patch holes in walls, so measure up and mark with a pencil before you put anything through walls.

Take extra care with candles

Candles are great to set the mood, but keep flames far from things like Easter baskets, flowers, and small fingers. Easter could sparkle — just not like that.

Detangle any lights

Fairy lights add sparkle, but overloaded plugs and tangled cords aren't a good look. And always switch off before bed to avoid a fire — nobody wants that kind of Easter surprise. Check out the following tips to help protect your home and valuables safe from an electrical fire.

Most of all — enjoy the break

Easter can be a busy time, so do what you can to enjoy it. Whether you're hosting a crowd, heading away, or juggling a bit of both, Easter is always sweeter when you pause and relax.

And remember, if something does go south, we're always here to help. You can log in to My Tower to lodge a claim, or if you need to call, we're here right through the Easter break. Don't have a My Tower account? Register here!
