Third party car insurance FAQs

What does third party insurance cover?

Third party car insurance covers damage you cause to other people's cars and property, but not your own. If your car's damaged by an uninsured vehicle, we'll repair your car up to $4,000 if you can identify the person at fault and the fault was more than 50% theirs.

Third party can be a good option if your car's older or not worth much but make sure it gives you the over you need.

Do I need both comprehensive and third party insurance?

No, you only choose one type of cover for your car. Comprehensive is our highest level of insurance, with a range of benefits like cover for damage by natural disasters, fire, and theft. It offers peace of mind knowing that, if something happens, you're covered.* On the other hand, third party is the minimum level of cover you can get, with limited benefits.

How much does third party insurance cost?

There are many factors that go into the cost of third party car insurance, from where you live to the driver's age. So, there's no one-size-fits-all price. There are ways you can reduce your premium though, such as increasing your excess or paying your premium annually.

Does third party cover drivers on a learners or restricted licence?

Yes, our third party insurance covers drivers on any New Zealand licence, including learners and restricted, as long as they drive within their licence conditions. Just make sure the driver is named on the certificate of insurance.

Is third party insurance mandatory in New Zealand?

No, third party car insurance isn't mandatory in New Zealand. However, there are risks to driving your car without insurance. You'll need to weigh up the risks and potential costs associated with being in an accident.
